Point Mugu Surf Contest
The 2011 NBVC Point Mugu Surf Contest Presented by Quiksilver is a community engagement event allowing the public access to one of the best waves in Southern California and providing an opportunity for NBVC to showcase our award winning stewardship of over 2,400 acres of environmentally sensitive beach and wetlands areas, and the various missions of NBVC and it's tenant commands. Proceeds from the event benefit local active duty service men and women at NBVC through the Liberty/Single Sailor Program, those 18-25.
Just over 7,000 people attended the 2 day surf contest that saw 167 military, civilian, and professional surfers compete in five divisions; and a Quiksilver Expression Session featuring their professional team riders and a few special entries including 4X Women's World Champion Stephanie Gilmore, Pipeline standout Strider Wasilewski, and big wave legend Peter Mel with Young Gun competitor and Peters' son John Mel, and Young Guns competitor 2010 National Champion Kanoa Igarashi.
This event started out Saturday in mixed swells in the 1-3 foot range before a Southerly swell that dominated Sunday bringing in sets with the nice shape that Point Mugu is known for in the 3-5 foot range for the finals. Early marine layer burned off for sunny afternoons and a great day at the beach for all. 10 bands provided entertainment for the spectators, vendors, and competitors: Reality Check, Red Mutts, Divine Crime, Conspiracy Theory, Roughs Edge, Big Junior Little, Banned From the Beach, Rising Son, BOOM BOOM BOOM, and Bret Jensen's Death Valley Jubilee.
Military competitor, Kris Grimm US Coast Guard, won the Revolution "Kegged for Cash" prize for the best barrel (or tube ride) of the event.
Military competitor, Matt Merel US Coast Guard, won his division for the 3rd straight year and Young Gun competitor Jake Kelley won for the 2nd straight year.
Tyler Newton, winner of the Men's Open Division also won a spot in the upcoming Bud Light Lime Surf Series at The Point in Ventura, CA 9/2-4,2011, earning $1,000 to compete for a prize purse of $100,000.
The Ventura County Fire Department Water Rescue provided safety support with observers on the beach and in the water, and thankfully no accidents required their assistance. The entire surfing community was grateful for their support and frequently showed it with roaring applause!
NBVC Commanding Officer, Captain James McHugh presented the awards with support from Peter Mel from Quiksilver. The event was hosted by the NBVC Morale, Welfare and Recreation with help from a host of volunteers. Meals were provided by The Flightline Café and Recreation center at NBVC Point Mugu. Channel Islands Logistics teamed with Chiquita to provide free healthy snacks fresh food products, and bananas for all in attendance.
