The Tee Shot
The most accomplished players often find the driver the most difficult club to hit consistently. The added length of a driver is a factor but the culprit lies in the loft of the club. The less the loft of a club the more sidespin that is imparted on the ball. A slightly open face on a wedge imparts little side spin while an open or closed face at impact with the driver produces an extreme slice or hook. While there are many causes for an errant tee shot, the fundamental flaw is often a poor grip! Here are a few suggestions on developing a proper grip that will help your full swing with the driver and other clubs.
The Grip
Do you go through a lot of gloves? If your gloves wear out on the heel or fingers very quickly, this may be the sign of some grip problems. You may be holding the club incorrectly and too tightly and not allowing the club to swing freely. Lighten your grip. Another fault that wear indicates is re-gripping. Keep your grip light and constant throughout the entire swing. Grip the club more in the fingers allowing the heel of your left hand to rest atop the shaft. This allows a better wrist cock in the back swing and an easier release through the hitting area. A proper grip also greatly assists with your balance as the club swings more freely and your body reacts to the swinging motion of the club instead of interfering with the swinging motion. Visit with one of our PGA Professionals on your next visit to the golf course and we’ll give you a complimentary five minute grip lesson. Positive results are guaranteed!
