Leap Frogs to kick off Centennial of Naval Aviation Celebrations
The U.S. Navy parachute demonstration team, “The Leap Frogs,” is scheduled to perform during the opening ceremony of the Centennial of Naval Aviation kick-off event over San Diego Bay, Feb. 12.
Free and open to the public, the event will feature more than 200 modern-day and historic aircraft from the past 100 years and performances by the Leap Frogs during the Parade of Flight.
“We’re very proud to be part of this historic event,” said Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Justin Gauny, the team’s leading chief petty officer. “The Navy has developed some incredible aircraft over the past century. Working beside them will be an honor and the possibility of jumping out of some of them is very exciting for us!”
The team plans to land on the flight deck of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), at Naval Air Station North Island, for one of the jumps. The carrier is homeported in Bremerton.
The Parade of Flight is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and may be viewed from NASNI show center. There will also be more than 75 historic, static aircraft, a classic car show, live entertainment and ship tours. Venue gates open at 9 a.m. and parking is free.
Background on “The Leap Frogs”
The U.S. Navy parachute demonstration team, “The Leap Frogs,” was created in the late 1960s when Navy SEALs performed at air shows on weekends. The Department of Defense officially commissioned the Leap Frogs in 1974 with the mission of demonstrating Navy excellence throughout the United States. The Leap Frogs are based in San Diego.
The team currently consists of parachutists who are Navy SEAL (SEa, Air, Land), SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewman) commandos and an aircrew survival equipmentman. SEALs are the U.S. Navy’s special operations force and the maritime component of U.S. Special Operations Command. SEALs are an offensive force focused on small-unit operations, which allow for increased mobility and flexibility. SWCC operators maintain the inventory of state-of-the-art, high-performance boats used for special operations missions. They are extensively trained in special operations craft and weapons tactics, techniques and procedures.
Leap Frogs performances may include canopy formations that team members create with their blue and gold parachutes. Some demonstrations also include colorful smoke, pyrotechnics, and a patriotic presentation of the American flag.

San Diego Bay safety zone for Parade of Flight
SAN DIEGO – The Coast Guard will enforce a safety zone on San Diego Bay the afternoon of Feb. 12th, during the Centennial of Naval Aviation Parade of Flight.
Everyone is highly encouraged to view the Parade of Flight from the land, however for those planning on getting underway, the safety zone will be in affect from noon to 4:00 p.m., and boaters will be able to view the festivities from the perimeter of the safety zone that will be in affect at western end of Harbor Island, south to the North Island Naval Base; near downtown boaters will be able to view from the eastern end of Harbor Island to the G Street Pier. The southern boundary line will cross the bay from North Embarcadero Park across the channel at buoy #23 to the Coronado ferry landing. The safety zone will be enforced by law enforcement personnel on the water and mariners are encouraged to contact Coast Guard or harbor patrol boats they see if they have any questions.
Boaters are asked to be clear of the safety zone by 11:30 a.m., and are asked to plan accordingly to avoid potential delays.
The safety zone is needed to protect the public from the aircraft that will be performing demonstrations during the event. The Navy will also be operating large air-cushioned landing craft (LCAC) within the safety zone.
Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary and Harbor Police patrol boats will be in position along the edges of the safety zone, and will make adjustments to the viewing lines as necessary. Boat operators must follow the directions of the patrol boats.
The Coast Guard may permit the passage of commercial and recreational vessels along the edges of the safety zone under the escort of a law enforcement vessel. These escorts may occur periodically based on the schedule of the air show and the weather conditions at the time. Boaters may ask to be escorted through the safety zone by hailing the Coast Guard Patrol Commander on VHF-FM marine radio channel 16. Boaters are reminded they may not move through the safety zone unless escorted by the Coast Guard.
The safety zone is the result of the coordinated joint efforts between the Navy, Federal Aviation Administration and the Coast Guard.

History is in the Air!
CORONADO – The largest formation of military aircraft since WWII will fly over San Diego Bay in a history-making flight, Saturday February 12 at 1p.m., commemorating the Centennial of Naval Aviation.
The parade of flight will include aircraft from the earliest days of flight up through the latest, most modern tactical aircraft in Naval Aviation.
Rear Admiral Pat McGrath who leads the Centennial of Naval Aviation effort said, “One hundred years ago Naval Aviation was on the heels of the Wright Brothers’ first flight at Kitty Hawk. Here in San Diego, experiments with “hydroaeroplanes” set the stage for the flying machine to become an integral part of our Navy.”
Today the evolution of technology has taken flight from the speed of a fast jog to well beyond the speed of sound. The inventory, missions and aircraft types have expanded to cover everything from transporting people and parts, to mountain rescue, combat operations and air interdiction.
“Even with all the innovation and technology improvements, America’s Navy depends on what it has always relied on…brave and intelligent men and women who volunteer to serve their nation. With the inaugural Centennial event here we honor, celebrate and commemorate those who have and continue to “Fly Navy!”
Naval Base Coronado opens to the public at 8 a.m. and will offer ships tours, entertainment and static displays of aircraft where aircrew will be available to discuss their aircraft and more.
