THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

WELCOME HOME! PIZZA PARTY & “NIGHT ON THE TOWN” TOURS
MWR’s Liberty Program hosts pizza parties for the crew members standing duty on returning ships the first night back in port at Naval Base San Diego, Naval Air
Station North Island, Naval Submarine Base Point Loma and Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. The “Night On the Town” tours take newly returned Sailors to San Diego points of interest. Annual participation is 10,500 Sailors.

“SAILORS HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME” LIBERTY CENTER PROGRAMS
Sailors head over to their Liberty Center for great events including: Luaus • BBQs • Comedy Nights • Special Event Parties with refreshments, entertainment and trivia and competitions • Super Bowl Extravaganzas • “Mardi Gras-style” shindigs complete with beads, food, games, music, and movies • Annual holiday festivities with free gift wrapping supplies and cards. Each of five Liberty Centers attracts 150 to 600 active duty military members per event and serves at least 30,000 Sailors annually. Sponsorship is per Liberty Center:

CHILD AND YOUTH CENTER PROGRAMS
Navy Region Southwest operates 14 child development and youth centers and 100 Navy certified home child development services throughout San Diego County. There are six Child Development Centers that offer child care for the ages of 0 through 5, eight Youth programs that offer services from 5 through 18 years of age and 100 Navy certified home services for children ages 0 through 12. On a monthly basis all programs provide education, physical activities, recreational field trips to theme parks, special visits to San Diego local attractions, small festivals, movie nights, dances, entertainment and many more fun events. Monthly events lead up to Region Wide Celebrations for all families to attend such as those listed. Sponsorship for all Child and Youth Center Programs supports over 4,500 children per month.

LIBERTY TRIPS and EXCURSIONS FOR SAILORS
Our five San Diego Liberty Centers go for it in a “big way” giving Sailors a much-needed break from the ship or the work center. Some of their trips include: Big Bear Ski & Snowboard; Catalina Island, Lake Havasu, Las Vegas, SeaWorld, Disneyland, San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, the Gaslamp District and many more. Liberty trips and excursions attract between 50 to 300 active duty military per event and serve15,000 annually. Sponsorship is per Liberty Center.

Free Active Duty Bowling & Billiards
Mondays and Tuesdays
MWR Recreation Centers provide Sailors with FREE bowing on Mondays at NASNI’s Sea ‘N Air Lanes and on Tuesdays FREE Bowling and Billiards at NAVBASE San Diego’s Admiral Robinson Recreation Center. The events attract approximately 400 per facility weekly, or 41,600 annually.Bowling Tournaments and Events

These events are open to all branches of the military, their families, reservists, retirees and DoD civilian personnel. Each event attracts from 600 to 1,000 participants.

PLAY BALL! Softball, Football, Volleyball, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Softball, Racquetball
The five San Diego Navy Fitness Centers serve over 84,000 patrons monthly, and hold league competitions, tournaments and All-Star events to build morale and help military members maintain peak physical fitness. Prizes are awarded to individual, command and group winners. Event favorites include: Presidents Day Softball Tournament • Navy Relief Sports Week Softball and Basketball Tournaments • Take-it-to-the-Hoop Lunchtime League • Kickball Tournament • PRT Command Challenge • Holiday Sports Week. Expected participation: 100-500 each event serving over 150,000 annually.

REGIONAL SAILOR OF THE YEAR PROGRAM
January through March 2009
The Sailor of the Year program recognizes special Sailors who have shown unusual or heretofore unrecognized honor, valor and dedication to fellow Sailors and the community. These Sailors embody the finest qualities of the men and women serving in today’s U. S. Navy. 300 expected recipients.

SECOND SATURDAY AUTO MAINTENANCE TRAINING PROGRAM
Begins January 10
Automotive experts share their expertise on the second Saturday of each month. Active duty military and their families observe demonstrations and learn how to conduct basic repairs and maintenance on their personal vehicle.

REGIONAL LIBERTY “Break Down” Dance competition
January 27
This Liberty competition, hosted by the Recyard on Naval Base, has been choreographed for our single Sailors who think they can dance! They compete for the title, prizes and fun in our “home-away-from-home” atmosphere. Each event attracts 150 to 350 active duty personnel.

POLAR BEAR PLUNGE
February 12
More than 350 participants jump in for a 500-meter cold-water swim in the Bay starting at Smuggler’s Cove aboard Naval Submarine Base, Point Loma. Music, prizes and food are provided for all.

Presidents Day softball tournament
February 21
This tournament celebrates Presidents Day in a fun way with a double elimination format at the Admiral Prout Field House on Naval Base San Diego. The event is free for all military, their families, reservists, retirees and civilian personnel, and attracts approximately 300 participants.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY 5K RUN/WALK
March 17
Our Sailors grab their green and enjoy the day by running or walking from the Admiral Prout Field House Sports Field aboard Naval Base San Diego. The event is open to all MWR patrons and attracts approximately 600 participants.

WOOF WALK
March 28
In this non-competitive event, the whole family walks 1-2 miles around Naval Base San Diego with their “pooches” and then are treated to a Fitness and Health Fair. Event attracts 400 participants.

LIBERTY’S AMAZING RACE!
April 18
In this exciting scavenger hunt/tour of San Diego naval installations, junior enlisted Sailors compete to be first on the mat with the greatest treasures. The event concludes with a party for the approximately 750 participants.

Quarterly Aerobathons
Jan 14 – April 22 – May 15/13– October 30 – December 1
Aerobathon Fitness Challenges are held at each of the five Navy Fitness Centers that serve over 84,000 participants monthly. Prizes are awarded to individuals, commands and group winners in these seasonal events. Activities attract 4,000 participants annually.

Family Spring Festival
April 4
This annual party at Naval Base San Diego serves all San Diego Navy Families. Activities focus on the military child and include entertainment, face painting, arts and crafts, inflatables, and paintball. Parents appreciate the resource fair and sponsor booths. Our Military Family event attracts more than 6,000 children and their family members.

“All hands!” car show
April 4
The “All Hands!” Car Show is open to all active duty, retirees, DoD employees and their dependents. Everyone is invited to show off their ride, admire those on display, participate in demonstrations and compete for prizes. Held at Naval Base San Diego concurrently with the Family Spring Festival, event is expected to attract 1,000 participants and 4,000 spectators.

NMAWC SPRING/FALL GOLF TOURNAMENTS
April and October
The NMAWC Golf Tourneys have a 4-person “Scramble-format” and a $300 winner’s purse. Winner of the “longest drive” gets a new driver; and “closest-to-the-hole” gets a new putter. Open to all MWR patrons; typically 160 participate.

AQUATHLON
May 8
Individuals or teams run 2 miles, swim 500 meters, run 2 more miles and end with pushups. The event is free for the approximately 1,000 military, family members, reservists, retirees and civilian personnel who participate.

Navy Relief 5K Run/Walk
May 13
This event invites all MWR patrons to put on their running shoes for a fun run in support of Navy Relief. Hosted on Naval Base San Diego this free event attracts approximately 1,000 military, their families, reservists, retirees and civilian personnel.

23rd ORIGINAL BAY BRIDGE RUN/WALK
May 17
This four-mile run/walk begins in the Gaslamp District, continues over the Bay Bridge and ends in Tidelands Park, Coronado. Participants of all ages compete in various age divisions for unique prizes autographed by the San Diego Padres, and each participant receives a free ticket to a Padres game. The event includes a sponsor expo, entertainment, awards ceremony and drawing prizes. This event is open to the public and attracts approximately 8,000 participants and 1,000 spectators.

Sports Day & NMAWC 400 race
June 4
It’s a Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command (NMAWC) tradition - a day of sports for all Sailors and their families featuring dozens of tournaments: ping pong, jousting, basketball and more. Winners are announced after the final 400-meter tricycle race. This event is fun, interactive, and attracts 1,000 participants.

2-MILE POKER FUN RUN/WALK
June 10
This fun event inspires fitness and health with displays from fitness vendors and sponsors. Held on the Naval Base San Diego Sports Field, the Poker Fun Run/Walk is open to all active duty, DoD civilians, retirees and their families and attracts approximately 1,000 participants.

LONGEST DAY OF THE YEAR SUN RUN/WALK
June 19
Military families catch some rays while celebrating “Sun Run” aboard Naval Air Station North Island. The event attracts 300 active duty military, DoD civilians, retirees and their families.

Splash ‘N Dash
June 26
This biathlon event, held aboard Naval Submarine Base Point Loma, challenges the fitness of active duty military, and includes a 500-yard swim from Smuggler’s Beach and a 5K run on the beach. The event attracts 300 participants.

FREEDOM FESTIVAL FOURTH OF JULY
MILITARY FAMILY CELEBRATION

July 4
Freedom Festival is an annual event at Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command, Point Loma. A celebration barbeque and picnic is held and activities include entertainment, face painting, obstacle courses, arts and crafts, inflatables, paintball, family resource fair with sponsor booths and more. The day finishes off with San Diego’s most spectacular fireworks display viewing from the shore. This celebration of our freedom and those who serve attracts 10,000 active duty military and their families.

BACKYARD FITNESS CHALLENGE
August 7
Two-person teams run together for 3 miles, complete 100-yard team wheelbarrow and piggyback races, and then finish with 60 pushups and 60 sit-ups, all in the “backyard” of the Admiral Prout Field House. Prizes are awarded to the top three teams. Drawings for giveaways are held throughout the event and the first 200 participants receives a T-shirt.

BAYSIDE BOAT BASH
August 22
Four teams of four each build rafts using only barrels, inner tubes, wood, duct tape, brooms and rope. The contestants race their crafts to a buoy approximately 100 meters away from the beach and back – or swim to shore. Event finishes with a BBQ and awards presentation. Open to all active duty, DoD civilians, retirees and their families, and attracts approximately 200 participants and spectators.

FAMILY FITNESS CHALLENGE
August 22
Families work out together and compete as a “family team.” Held at the Olde Gym at Naval Base San Diego, “family teams” must complete various challenges in order to finish. Anticipated participation is 450.

POW/MIA MEMORIAL 5K RUN
September 9
This run is a tribute from MWR and our Sailors to POWs and MIAs. Held each September, it includes vendor displays, a presentation by a former Prisoner of War and awards for winning commands. Over 4,500 runners participate.

PRT COMMAND CHALLENGE
September 11
This is a 45-team competition held aboard NMAWC, Point Loma. Six hundred active duty personnel compete in a 3-mile run, and must complete 100 pushups and 100 sit-ups.

FEARLESS CHALLENGE
September 17
Sailors face their fears -do they have what it takes? Sailors compete against each other to see who can outwit, out-eat and outlast the best of the best. Winners take home a hefty cash prize! 200 active duty participants and 500 spectators will attend.

“OKTOBERFEST” SAILORS AND FAMILIES APPRECIATION WEEK
October 8
To show appreciation for active duty Sailors and their families, weeklong activities culminate in an Oktoberfest celebration. This event is held annually at the Naval Submarine Base, Point Loma. The festivities feature seasonal refreshments, games, activities and entertainment. Event attracts approximately 2,000 active duty military and their families.

Oktoberfest 5K Run/1-Mile Walk
October 8
This fun event kicks off the Fall Season with a fun 5K run or 1-mile walk on Naval Air Station North Island along the Quay Wall overlooking the bay. Drawings for giveaways are held at the end of the event and each of the 300 participants receives a T-shirt.

HAUNTED 2-MILE RUN
October 28
Everyone’s invited to don their Halloween costume and take a nighttime jog or walk through the dark streets of Naval Base San Diego. Prizes are awarded for run winners and for best Halloween costumes. Over 600 MWR patrons enjoy the thrills.

MWR MILITARY RETIREE FAIR
November 7
Retired military personnel, prospective retirees and their family members enjoy recreational, health and fitness opportunities at this popular annual event. Held in conjunction with the Retired Military Personnel Seminar, this resource fair attracts 80+ informational and fun booths. More than 2,500 participants enjoy the seminar, sponsored lunch and fair activities. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to meet San Diego’s military retirees. Our event sponsors are featured in the San Diego Military Retiree Magazine distributed to the 48,000 San Diego County military retirees.

Veterans Day 2-Mile Run/Walk
November 10
Take some time out of your day and run/walk alongside and honor our military veterans in a fun run on Naval Base San Diego. All patrons are welcome. This free event attracts approximately 600 military, their families, reservists, retirees and civilian personnel.

Naval Base Point Loma Olympics
November 14
This base-wide competition involves 2-3 person teams competing in a relay event and 6 individual events that include: long jump, kayak race, inner tube race, one mile hurdle race and other events. Drawings for giveaways are held at the end of the event and each of the 100 participants will receive a T-shirt.

HOLIDAY WATERFRONT 5K
December 2
Runners keep in shape during the holidays by running along the waterfront at Naval Base San Diego. The finish line celebration includes vendor booths and awards presentations. Expected participation is 1,000 MWR patrons.

HOLIDAY ON THE WHARF
December 3
This fun-filled day for military families is held aboard Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command, Point Loma. Artificial snow is brought onto the wharf as active duty military and their family members enjoy refreshments, games and carolers. This activity attracts 1,000 active duty military and their families.

FAMILY HOLIDAY PARTY
December 5
The Family Holiday Party is held at Naval Base San Diego. This annual event celebrates the holiday season with military children and their family members enjoying artificial snow, carolers, crafts, refreshments, inflatables, horse and buggy rides and a visit with Santa. Event is open to active duty personnel and families. 6,000 children and their families attend.

HOLIDAY GIFT BAGS FOR SAILORS
December 25
Each year MWR stuffs 10,000 Gift Bags to wish our Sailors “Happy Holidays” with special gifts, tokens and are given to Sailors who “stand the watch” on Christmas Day.
